A counter showing the salary range ₹3.1 to ₹10.2 LPA for a full stack fresher in Chennai.

At ₹6.6 LPA, a fresher in Chennai can save ₹20,256 a month after rent and bills. That is a 39% savings rate, according to the Chennai salary tracker on SalaryInsight. Most students never do this sum. Note that ₹6.6 LPA is one example from a single tracker, not the usual fresher offer; services freshers often start nearer ₹3.5 to 4.5 LPA and would save far less. They look at the big CTC number on the offer letter and stop there. This post shows you how to check any Chennai offer in four steps, so you know how much money you keep.

A full stack fresher in Chennai earns about ₹3.1 to ₹10.2 LPA CTC, with IT services at the low end and product companies at the high end. That range comes from SalaryInsight's Chennai page. CTC is not the amount that reaches your bank account. To judge an offer, convert it to monthly in-hand pay. Then subtract Chennai rent and living costs, and see what is left to save.

Place the offer in a Chennai company tier

Where you land in the ₹3.1 to ₹10.2 LPA range depends mostly on the type of company, not on your stack. A React and Node developer can get very different offers from a services firm and from a product company. The table shows what the verified sources report for each tier.

Treat these as ranges, not promises. Your own offer depends on the exact role and on the interview rounds you clear. SalaryInsight names TCS and Wipro as the services employers at the lower end, along with HCL. If you also hold a frontend-only offer, the Chennai front-end fresher salary guide covers that role.

Convert CTC to monthly in-hand pay

CTC includes pay you never receive as cash. So in-hand pay is lower than CTC divided by 12. The gap depends on how the company splits the pay. At ₹6.6 LPA, CTC divided by 12 is ₹55,000, and the tracker's ₹52,556 is only about 4.5% under that. The gap is small here, likely because less income tax is due at lower pay. It grows as pay rises: SalaryInsight's own figures sit about 12% under CTC divided by 12 at ₹14.8 LPA and about 21% under at ₹28.5 LPA. Treat ₹52,556 as an optimistic estimate and check it against your own offer letter. SalaryInsight gives one fresher-level worked example for Chennai full stack roles.

None of the sources used here gives an in-hand figure for the lowest services offers. For those, you have to ask the company.

Use this order when an offer letter arrives:

  1. Read the CTC breakup

Ask for the annexure that lists every component. A single CTC line hides too much.

  2. Find the fixed and variable parts

Variable pay depends on performance and company results. Count only the fixed part as money you can plan with.

  3. Check the PF and tax lines

Provident Fund (PF) is retirement saving that the company deducts from your pay every month. Your tax depends on the regime you choose, which is one of two ways of calculating income tax, so ask HR which one payroll will use. As a rough formula, monthly in-hand pay is the CTC, minus employer PF, bonus and insurance, minus your own PF and tax, divided by 12.

  4. Ask HR for the in-hand figure

Send one polite email asking for the expected monthly take-home amount. HR teams answer this question often.

Subtract Chennai rent and living costs

After a 1BHK near OMR and normal expenses, a ₹6.6 LPA fresher still saves about ₹20,256 a month, using SalaryInsight's cost-of-living figures. The page lists a 1BHK near OMR at ₹13,000 a month and a 2BHK at ₹20,000. It puts total monthly expenses for a single person at ₹32,300, including rent.

In-hand pay at ₹6.6 LPA₹52,556SalaryInsight
Minus single-person expenses₹32,300SalaryInsight
Left to save₹20,256 (39%)SalaryInsight

This sum works for any offer once you know its in-hand pay. Take the monthly cash, subtract your expenses, and divide what is left by the in-hand pay to get your savings rate. If you live as a couple, use the couple figure of ₹39,300 instead.

Two offers with similar CTC can leave you with very different savings. A higher fixed share means more cash. A lower rent means more of that cash stays with you.

Here is a labelled estimate for a ₹4 LPA services offer. It is my own sum, not a sourced figure. ₹4,00,000 divided by 12 is about ₹33,300. Assume a basic pay of ₹15,000 a month, so employer PF and your own PF are ₹1,800 each. Assume ₹1,000 a month goes to bonus and insurance, and that no income tax is due at this pay. In-hand pay is then about ₹28,700. Take SalaryInsight's non-rent spending of ₹19,300 (₹32,300 minus ₹13,000 rent) and add ₹6,700 for one share of a ₹20,000 2BHK split three ways. That leaves about ₹2,700 a month, under 10% of in-hand pay. Alone in a 1BHK at ₹13,000, the same offer runs about ₹3,600 short each month. Saarthi's company-wise fresher salary breakdown lists more offers you can run through the same sum.

Choose your area before you accept

Where the office is decides your rent and your commute, which changes how much of the salary you keep. SalaryInsight lists OMR with Sholinganallur, and Guindy with Tambaram, as the main tech hiring areas in Chennai, plus Porur.

Before you say yes, open a rental site such as NoBroker or MagicBricks. Search for flats within a short commute of the office address on your offer letter. Note the rent you see, and use it in the savings sum above.

A cheaper flat far from the office is not always a saving. A long daily ride costs money for travel and hours you could spend learning.

Bangalore rent can cancel a higher salary

SalaryInsight puts Bangalore rent at about ₹18,000, against ₹13,000 for a 1BHK near OMR, so Bangalore rent is about ₹5,000 higher and a bigger CTC there is not automatically better.

For the national picture, read the national fresher salary guide.

Weigh a SaaS offer against an IT services offer

Chennai's SaaS companies pay product-level salaries, so a services offer should be compared with them, not just with other services offers. Zoho and Freshworks are well-known examples of this SaaS group, with Chargebee alongside them, as ShiftToTech's Chennai salary report describes.

That report is about data engineers, not full stack developers. Use it as an analogy only. It shows a clear pay gap between services firms and SaaS firms for the same kind of work in the same city. The Zoho and TCS rows in the first table show a similar gap for freshers.

Pros

  • IT services: easier to get into through campus placements and national hiring tests.
  • IT services: large training programs for freshers.
  • Product and SaaS: higher pay from the first year.
  • Product and SaaS: you usually work on one product for a long time.

Cons

  • IT services: lower starting pay.
  • IT services: your project and tech stack may be assigned to you.
  • Product and SaaS: harder coding interviews.
  • Product and SaaS: fewer openings each year.

Avoid common offer mistakes

Most bad decisions come from comparing CTC numbers instead of the cash left after costs. Watch for these four:

Compare offers by money left after costs, not by CTC
Compare offers by money left after costs, not by CTC
  • Comparing CTC across companies. Two firms structure CTC differently. Ask each one for in-hand pay before you compare.
  • Counting variable pay as fixed. Bonuses can shrink or disappear. Plan your rent on fixed pay only.
  • Forgetting rent. An offer near an expensive area can leave you with less than a smaller offer near a cheaper one.
  • Treating one salary website as exact. Salary trackers collect reports and estimates. Use them to check whether an offer is reasonable, then trust the offer letter.

Take your best offer and find its in-hand pay. Subtract the ₹32,300 single-person expense figure, adjusted for the rent in your chosen area. Write the monthly savings next to the offer. Do this for every offer you hold, and fill in one line for each of them: CTC and fixed pay, then monthly in-hand pay, then rent and monthly savings. Keep that line next to the offer letter.

Node.js Interview Questions for 5 Years Experience

Senior Node.js interviews test how the runtime behaves, not just syntax. Expect deep questions on event loop phases, thread pools, memory leaks, and scaling. Here are the questions, model answers, and the code traps that separate a 2-year from a 5-year candidate.
