How Much Do Developers Really Earn in India in 2026? Salary by Experience and City
An honest 2026 breakdown of software developer salary in India: real ranges by experience and city, CTC vs in-hand, the service vs product gap, and how to raise your pay.

An offer letter with a number that looked huge. Then payday, and a bank balance far smaller than the letter promised. Nobody was cheated. That gap is simply how salary works in India, and almost nobody explains it before you sign.
So let me give you honest numbers, not hype. I am Arnab, and I teach full-stack at DevHives in Kolkata. I see real offers from real students every month.
Quick answer: what is the software developer salary in India in 2026?
A software developer salary in India in 2026 ranges from about ₹3.5–6 LPA for freshers at service companies to ₹6–15 LPA at product companies, with mid-level developers earning ₹6–20 LPA depending on skills and city. These are CTC figures (cost to company). Your in-hand pay is usually 65–75% of CTC. FAANG offers of ₹25–30 LPA exist, but they are outliers for top candidates, not the median.
One note before the numbers. Aggregator sites disagree a lot. AmbitionBox, PayScale, and Indeed use different methods and self-reported data. So I give ranges, not fake exact averages. Treat any single “average” number with caution.
What does a fresher actually earn in India in 2026?
A fresher developer salary in India in 2026 is roughly ₹3.5–6 LPA at service companies and ₹6–15 LPA at product companies (all figures are CTC). Your first job type matters more than your college rank.
This is where beginners get confused. Two freshers with the same skills can earn very different pay. The difference is usually the company type, not the person.
The ₹25–30 LPA offers are real, but they are outliers. They go to candidates from premier institutes with strong data-structures and system-design skills. Please do not treat them as the normal fresher number. If you want a grounded view of the entry-level market, read my piece on the junior developer job market in 2026.
How does salary grow with experience?
A software engineer salary by experience in India usually doubles between the fresher stage and 4–5 years, if you keep learning and change jobs at the right time. Growth is fastest in the first five years.
Here is what most tutorials skip: experience alone does not raise pay. Better skills plus a well-timed job switch raise pay. Two developers with five years can sit far apart on the salary chart.
| Experience | Service company CTC | Product company CTC |
|---|---|---|
| Fresher (0–1 yr) | ₹3.5–6 LPA | ₹6–15 LPA |
| 2–3 years | ₹6–9 LPA | ₹9–18 LPA |
| 4–5 years | ₹10–14 LPA | ₹14–28 LPA |
| 6–8 years | ₹14–22 LPA | ₹22–45 LPA+ |
All numbers are CTC ranges for 2026, and they vary by city, company, and skill. Notice how the product-company column pulls ahead at every stage. That gap is the single biggest lever on your lifetime earnings.
Developer salary by role and language
Pay changes with your role and your main language. The table shows the average base salary in India for each role, from PayScale. It mixes all experience levels. A fresher starts below these numbers.
| Role (India) | Average base salary per year | Per month, before deductions | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software developer | About ₹7.1 lakh | About ₹59,000 | PayScale, 1,799 profiles |
| Software engineer | About ₹8.1 lakh | About ₹68,000 | PayScale, 4,950 profiles |
| Java developer | About ₹5.9 lakh | About ₹49,000 | PayScale, 527 profiles |
| Python developer | About ₹5.4 lakh | About ₹45,000 | PayScale, 228 profiles |
| C++ developer | About ₹6 lakh | About ₹50,000 | PayScale, 50 profiles (older data, last updated May 2024) |
| Front-end developer | About ₹6.6 lakh | About ₹55,000 | PayScale, 872 profiles |
| Full stack developer | About ₹6.7 lakh | About ₹56,000 | PayScale, 734 profiles |
| Data engineer | About ₹9.9 lakh | About ₹82,000 | PayScale, 1,143 profiles |
| Data scientist | About ₹10.1 lakh | About ₹84,000 | PayScale, 1,122 profiles |
The monthly column is the yearly average divided by 12, rounded.
What the table shows:
- Data roles pay the most. Data engineers and data scientists average close to ₹10 lakh.
- The main language roles sit close together. Pick the language that fits the work you want.
- Fresher pay is lower. See the data engineer fresher salary and Python developer fresher salary guides.
One company's salary: where to check
This table shows the market, not one employer. For one company, search for its name plus "salaries" on AmbitionBox or Glassdoor. Employees report their own pay there. Check how many people reported before you trust a number.
Which cities pay developers the most in India?Bangalore pays the most, with Hyderabad and Pune close behind. Tier-2 cities pay less, but remote work is slowly closing that gap.
The software developer salary in Bangalore sits at the top because most product companies and well-funded startups have offices there. More product companies means more competition for talent, which pushes pay up.
| City (2026) | Relative pay | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bangalore | Highest | Most product companies and startups |
| Hyderabad | Close to top | Big global product offices |
| Pune | Close to top | Strong mix of product and IT |
| Gurgaon / Noida (NCR) | High | Startups and large firms |
| Chennai / Kolkata | Moderate | More service-company heavy |
| Tier-2 cities | Lower | Fewer product companies, but remote helps |
I live in Kolkata, so I will be honest. A local-only job here often pays less than the same role in Bangalore. But a remote role for a Bangalore or foreign company can erase that gap completely. Remote work is the quiet equalizer for tier-2 developers in 2026.
Why is the service vs product gap so wide?
Product companies sell software and earn high margins, so they can pay more per developer. Service companies sell developer hours to clients, so their margins are thinner.
This is the core of the service company vs product company salary debate. It is not about your talent. It is about how each business makes money.
| Factor | Service company | Product company |
|---|---|---|
| How they earn | Bill client per hour | Sell a product, high margin |
| Fresher CTC (2026) | ₹3.5–6 LPA | ₹6–15 LPA |
| Pay growth speed | Slower, fixed bands | Faster, skill-based |
| What they want | Reliable delivery | Strong problem solving |
I am not saying service companies are bad. They train thousands of freshers and give a real start. Many strong developers begin there, learn fast, then switch to a product company in two or three years. That switch is often where the big jump happens.
Why does CTC look bigger than your bank balance?
CTC is the total cost to the company, not your take-home pay. Your in-hand salary is usually 65–75% of CTC after deductions.
This is exactly the gap described at the top of this post. A ₹6 LPA offer does not mean ₹6 lakh divided by twelve landing in your account each month. CTC includes many parts you never see as cash.
- Provident Fund (PF): a retirement deduction, taken from your salary every month.
- Gratuity: a long-service benefit you only get after years, not monthly cash.
- Variable / bonus: paid only if targets are met, sometimes not at all.
- Joining bonus: often one-time, but counted in the yearly CTC figure.
- Insurance and perks: real value, but not money in your bank.
- Income tax (TDS): cut before the salary reaches you.
So for a ₹6 LPA CTC, a rough in-hand is around ₹38,000–45,000 per month (JobRise’s worked example). Always ask a recruiter for the in-hand breakup before you celebrate. Wondering if this whole path is still worth it with AI around? I answered that in is it worth learning to code now that AI exists.
What skills actually raise your salary?
Skills that are hard to hire for raise your pay the most: cloud, DevOps, AI and machine learning, and system design. These move you from “replaceable” to “in demand”.
According to the Stack Overflow Developer Survey, pay tracks closely with specialized, in-demand skills. The same pattern holds in India. The market pays for problems that are hard to solve.
- Cloud (AWS, GCP, Azure): almost every product runs on the cloud now.
- DevOps (CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes): companies pay to ship faster and safer.
- AI / ML and data skills: high demand, still few strong candidates.
- System design: the skill that separates senior pay from junior pay.
- Strong data structures: still the gate for top product-company interviews.
You do not need all five. Pick one deep skill on top of solid fundamentals. If you are still building those fundamentals, my guide on how to learn to code in 2026 shows the order I recommend.
Switch or stay: what raises pay fastest?
Switching jobs raises pay fastest. Most people who switch ask for a 21–30% hike (foundit survey), while the average yearly increment in India is about 9.1% in 2026 (Deloitte India).
The math is simple and a little unfair. Companies pay market rate to new hires but give smaller raises to existing staff. So loyalty often costs you money in the early years.
Sources: Deloitte India Talent Outlook 2026, Michael Page via Outlook Business (promotion hikes of 20–30%), foundit appraisal survey.
I am not telling you to job-hop every year. That can hurt you. The smart pattern is: stay long enough to learn deeply, ship real work, then switch once you can prove a new skill. Two strong switches in five years can do more for your salary than five quiet increments.
Try this: write down your current CTC, your in-hand, and one skill you will go deep on this quarter. That one page is your real salary plan.
Start with one honest number
Salary in India is not a single magic figure. It is a range that depends on your company type, your city, and the skills you can prove. Know your in-hand, pick one deep skill, and time your moves.
Before you compare offers with anyone, work out your own in-hand number from the CTC breakdown above. A number you understand is worth more than a bigger one you do not.
